CHIJMES
CHIJMES was first a Catholic convent and convent quarters in Singapore, and was also where CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School first began in 1933. Now, the chapel is known as CHIJMES Hall and the convent quarters, Caldwell House, is an art gallery. CHIJMES is a dining, shopping and entertainment destination, with its function hall providing a space for performance arts. With its rich history, it has been gazetted as a national monument.
Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall
Built in the 19th century, Victoria Theatre
and Concert Hall is one of the first theatres in Singapore
and a national monument
of Singapore. Considered the
performing arts space with one of the best acoustics in the country, countless
performances, including dance and drama, have been put up here over its
149-year-old history. Many local actors and actresses have started their
careers here. Today, it undergoes renovation to open in 2013, combining its old
charm with modern functionality.
Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay
Located near the mouth of the scenic Singapore River, the Esplanade building is a uniquely designed landmark. It is specialised to be a performing arts hub for Singapore, with a Concert Hall, Theatre and outdoor performing spaces to cater to all sorts of performing needs. With state-of-the-art acoustics and systems, it is truly a world-class performing venue. The library@esplanade is also dedicated to the arts scene and is the first in Singapore. Truly, it is the perfect space for the performing arts.
Sinema Old School Theatre
Sinema Old School Theatre, located atop Mount Sophia,
is a small cinema that screens independent films in Singapore, both local and regional.
It also hosts film forums and dialogue sessions. With state of the art systems
and plush leather seats for a luxurious viewing experience, local film enthusiasts
have found a home here. By showcasing more obscure films in Singapore, the film experience in Singapore is
further enhanced.
Singapore Art Museum
Opened in 1996, it is located at the former St. Joseph's Institution. The large building was restored for use as the Singapore Art Museum, and now holds thousands of art pieces in its collection. There is also an auditorium and multi-purpose hall here, and former classrooms make up galleries. There is also another building, SAM at 8Q, which presents installation works and SAM also organised this year's Singapore Biennale.
