Singapore Arts Festival

The Singapore Arts Festival is an annual one that is well-known internationally. Started by the National Arts Council in 1977, it is one of the biggest and most important arts events in Singapore. It celebrates both local and international artwork, with over 70% of the events put up by international artists. It incorporates several arts disciplines, including visual arts, drama, theatre and music.

This year's edition of the Singapore Arts Festival is in its 33rd year and its theme is Between You and Me, aimed at bringing people and art closer together. Also, it is aiming to reach out to all members of the public with an outreach programme, com.mune.

Singapore Biennale

As its name suggests, the Singapore Biennale is held once every two years in Singapore. The first, held in 2006, was held for a period of ten weeks and featured 95 artists from 38 countries, with the theme of Belief. Venues included historic buildings and religious sites, to tie in with the theme. The second, held in 2008, was held over eight weeks with 66 participating artists from 36 countries, under the theme of Wonder. The works encouraged people to be "surprised and tantalised" and also to question and debate over art.

2011's Biennale was shifted from 2010 in order not to clash with the Youth Olympic Games, and it will be held from 13 March to 15 May, under the theme of Open House. 2011's Biennale aims to bring together artwork with a multitude of perspectives and different approaches towards different issues.

Noise Singapore 2011

An initiative by the National Arts Council to showcase the artistic talents of Singapore's youth, this year's Noise Singapore 2011 has been organised for the sixth year running. Prominent people in Singapore's creative industries work together with the NAC to nurture promising youths in art and develop their talents further. Over 1000 youths submitted over 9000 pieces of work in three categories: Art and Design, Music and Photography. This year, the Art & Design and Photography exhibition was held at the basement of Ion Orchard, and the Music concerts were held at the Esplanade. Some artists presented their original works for the very first time.
